New Beginnings’ Annual Gala — “The Boys Next Door” by Tom Griffin
On November 2nd, 2024, New Beginnings held its Annual Gala in the form of a performance of The Boys Next Door, by Tom Griffin, with Jenny Sullivan, director, and Rod Lathim, dramaturg. The production explored the lives of four men with mental health and developmental disabilities living together in permanent supportive housing, under the guidance of a caring yet burned-out social worker. Through a blend of humor and poignancy, the play portrayed their daily challenges, aspirations, and moments of triumph, offering an authentic, heartfelt portrayal of their humanity and struggles.
The play resonated deeply with New Beginnings’ mission: to provide quality, affordable counseling, shelter, case management, and education that strengthen our community and provide our clients with the ability to lead healthy and productive lives. New Beginnings designs its events to engage attendees in discussion, experience, and education, ensuring that each production fosters meaningful conversations about the most critical issues facing the community. This interactive approach not only entertains but also raises awareness of mental health, housing, and social support challenges, encouraging a deeper understanding of these vital issues.
In addition to its cultural impact, the event marked New Beginnings’ most successful Annual Gala to date! As the nonprofit has served 2,125 unduplicated clients in this last fiscal year, all donated funds will be used to support essential services, including housing for homeless veterans, housing for individuals and families living in their vehicles, staff and case manager support, and continued assistance for the vulnerable populations in Santa Barbara County. This success highlighted the importance of community involvement and belief in New Beginnings’ mission, which continues to make a tangible difference by providing vital resources, hope, and opportunities for those who need it most.

New Beginnings is helping low-income people throughout Santa Barbara County with their affordable counseling services, helping them navigate difficult times, find housing, and get back on their feet. Their Safe Parking Program has been replicated nationally, allowing people in transition to sleep safely and find housing through the Rapid Re-Housing program, and their clients are always treated with dignity and respect.
Prevent Santa Barbara’s Most Vulnerable From Falling Back into Crisis
New Beginnings seeks $250,000 in unrestricted funding to support essential client needs not covered by government funding. Your generous donations help provide food, hygiene items, and pet care for those living in vehicles, dental and medical care for individuals whose health has suffered on the streets, and extended motel stays for clients undergoing treatments like cancer care.
“This funding is crucial in preventing clients from falling back into crisis,” Executive Director Kristine Schwarz says. “Your donation directly supports these critical, often overlooked services, helping New Beginnings guide vulnerable clients toward stability and positive outcomes.”
