Brain Lab
In 2012, we launched an after-school literacy program called Brain Lab. This program is designed for students in first grade through sixth grade and is offered at no cost to participants.
Brain Lab targets skills such as memory, attention, processing rate, and cognitive skills that are essential for reading. We utilize the software program Fast ForWord, data driven computer exercises by Carnegie Learning.
This program addresses reading and language skills while concurrently developing foundational cognitive skills like memory, attention, processing, and sequencing. These cognitive skills are central to all learning, resulting in improved outcomes for reading and other subject areas, too.
This is an intensive program and requires commitment to completing a 30-40 minute session, 3-5 days per week. One of the days will be completed at the Language Center, where the child will also participate in direct instruction with a Speech-Language Pathologist to target specific areas he or she may be struggling such as spelling, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and social skills.
We are so excited that our Speech Language Pathologist, Summer Calvert, is attending a specialized training course on dyslexia. With this training, she will bring an added expertise in this area that will help our students make even more progress!

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don’t know what would have happened with the education of my children without RiteCare. My son couldn’t read in fourth grade. He attended Brain Lab, where he was diagnosed with dyslexia. When he left primary school, he was able to level out of support and he is now earning good grades. My youngest daughter was born with a speech problem, and she could not articulate a word in Spanish or English. The truth is, as a mother, I felt frustrated and desperate because I did not understand what my daughter was asking me or needed at that moment. My daughter improved with her speech at RiteCare but also needed help with reading. She continued with support and is now in fourth grade doing well.

The need never stops. At RiteCare Childhood Language Center of Santa Barbara there is always a waiting list of children who are falling further behind their peers in speech, language, and reading skills.
Every dollar donated to RiteCare allows them to take on more children. It helps support their vital programs, their ongoing operations, and allows them to continue innovating and developing new programs, like Camp Chit Chat and Brain Lab, potentially leading to new solutions to help kids in even more exciting and effective ways.
